North Atlantic Ocean Currents

5 Day Forecast of Current, Sea Surface Height and Sea Surface Temperature (FOAM model)

Issued daily by the UK National Centre for Ocean Forecasting

Area covered

Example images

Newfoundland - Grand Banks where Labrador current meets the Gulf Stream. Cold, nutrient rich water meets the much warmer water of the Gulf Stream resulting in highly productive fishing grounds.
Thick fog is a common feature of this area as warm moist air from above the Gulf Stream moves over the much colder water on the Banks.

The Gulf Stream brings warmth to the UK and north-west Europe and is the reason mild winters occur in the region. Without this steady stream of warmth the British Isles winters are estimated to be more than 5C cooler, bringing the average December temperature in London to about 2C.

Here (April 2010) it is 5 degrees warmer on the W coast than the North Sea.
