Newport to Bermuda Race 2012
NEWS

Tidetech pleased to announce our most comprehensive race package yet

There is a large amount of model and observational data available for the North East US and Gulfstream regions. Sorting through it all in the race planning period is a full time job for the navigator and often its difficult to know what data to use - and much of it is only available as online images, which doesn't help with analysing the data or performing routing using software.

Tidetech has been working for several months to prepare for this Bermuda Race to save you time, effort and help you get the best result possible by:

  • Researching all available data,
  • Determining which is the most accurate data
  • Accessing the data from the various institutes concerned
  • Converting raw data sources into Grib Files and automating the retrival and processing of the data
  • Re-processing to ensure the smallest practical file size for use offshore

Data alone is often not enough, so we will be offering the choice of a comprehensive analysis of conditions, delivered by online video or a private briefing with our leading oceanographer, Dr Roger Proctor.

Options

1.   Custom Grib Files

 $485
2.   Expert Analysis (includes option 1)

 $675
3.   Private Briefing for your Team (includes options 1 and 2)

 $1250

Features

  • Access Grib files from a Lite page on our website or download through Expedition or Adrena
  • We provide small sub regions for each data product so you can keep your bandwidth costs down while at sea.
  • Integrated with Expedition and Adrena
  • Compatible with Maxsea, Deckman, Euronav, MacEnc, InavX (iPad), Expedition LT, Adrena Free
  • Access to gribs from June 1st to 30th - to help you with your race planning and return trip
  • What's different with this package and Tidetech's standard PRO subscription?

Ocean Forecast Models

FOAM From the UK centre for Ocean Forecasting
NCOM From the US Navy Ocean Dynamics and Prediction Branch

Satellite Altimetry  - Analysis

AVISO Geostrophic Currents inferred from satellite measurements of sea surface height - represent an average of currents over the previous 5 days. Regarded by oceanographers as the 'Gold Standard' for ocean current data  - but not a forecast.

High resolution coastal model

FVCOM from NERACOOS for Narangasset Bay, and coastal region out to the continental shelf.

1km 'cloud free' merged Sea Surface Temperature

NASA JPL G1 L3 product

1km 'latest' Sea Surface Temperature AVHRR POES and GOES satellite observations

RUTGERS

High resolution weather model

WRF from NERACOOS

High resolution wave model

WW3 Regional Model

Expert Analysis

We will provide two online pre-recorded briefings - a short briefing of emerging trends 1 week before the race and a full, detailed briefing the day before the start.

The briefings will use the various grib files we are providing, plus other relevant observational data and will explain what to expect and how to gain maximum advantage out of the package.

What will you get? See an example with our 2011 Sydney to Hobart online briefing here

Private Briefing

Dr Roger Proctor, research scientist, oceanographer, consultant to the Australian Sailing Team and former consultant to Team GBR will be available for a private briefing (via Skype) the day before the race.

Your Team will be able to pose questions about oceanographic conditions and data and gain expert insight into ocean processes from the most respected oceanographer in sailing.

A great opportunity to gain in depth knowledge about what to expect during the race and how to interpret oceanographic data with an expert eye.

Video conferencing and screen sharing facilities with Skype will be available.
Check available briefing slots on an online calender and make a booking to suit

The difference between the Bermuda Race package and the standard subscription is:

  1. It includes special products just for the Race – NCOM, FVCOM high resolution currents for Newport / NE Coast, Rutgers High Res SST, AVISO altimetry currents, which are not available on our standard PRO subscription.
  2. Ocean models are just as prone to being wrong as weather models and have particular difficulty with the region of the Gulf Stream East of Cape Hatteras to the Grand Banks – which is the most volatile region for ocean currents in the world. This is why we provide a choice of two models, plus satellite altimetry currents so we can recommend the best performing model for the period of the race.
JPL SST is a great product, but is a composite which is a day or two old. Rutgers SST gives us the ability to provide you with the latest satellite pass, as soon as it comes in.  This means you will be able to pick up any changes in the position of the observed current during racing.
  3. The analysis we are offering will save you lots and time and effort to work out what is going on.
